Perry's attempts to gain popularity in the mainstream were unsuccessful. Prior to any new music could even be put out, two record labels signed, then were able to drop Perry. In 2007 however Capitol Records put out Perry's EP Ur So Gay which attracted modest attention for its cheerfully playful title track. "I Kissed" a Girl was a more bold ode to sexism that was with a sharp edged electro-pop rhythm. I Kissed a Girl was immediately a hit but it quickly sparked controversies. Many critics argued that the track promoted same-sex sexual relations however others believed that the scene which was depicted on the album attracted more male fantasies. I Kissed a Girl was a smash hit for Perry's debut album The One of the Boys in 2008, thanks to the combination of titillation combined with polished melodicism. The sharp, energetic second single also proved well-loved. The album that Perry created in large portion sold more than three million copies.
